VENICE TIDE BARRIER SYSTEM-THE MOSE PROJECT

ABSTRACT
This report gives a detailed description about a system of movable barriers constructed to protect the city of Venice from frequent and intensive flooding. The protection of the Venetian lagoon was of utmost importance for the survival of Venice. Hence the Mose Project was introduced as a remedy. This report deals with why the Mose project was deemed necessary, the various factors leading to floods, the specifications of the project, the operating principle, the various construction sites, the implication of the project to the environment.
Various other barrier projects have been constructed in the recent past but the Mose project stands out due to its complexity and huge cost of construction. When constructed, the Venice tide barriers will be the biggest dam construction in the world. A product of extraordinary civil engineering skills, the Venice tide barriers will protect the famous city from the constant sea water flooding that has haunted the city for many decades now. The construction details of the three inlets connecting the lagoon to the sea are also discussed in this report.
This report is a case study which analyses various pros and cons of this project including its technology as well as its impact on the nearby environment.
